big guava music festival
So i'm back in Tampa Bay, and could not be happier!! I literally got off the plane and got ready to go to Big Guava Music Festival at the Florida State Fairgrounds with my best friend... It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. The vibe at festivals is so enlightening and high energy, it almost feels like a whole other world. The lineup consisted of big names from James Blake to BANKS and even smaller, amazing finds like The Silent Films and Zella Day. To me, there is nothing like live music... and to be surrounded by FOUR stages of it was basically a dream come true!! Here's a little taste of my weekend at Big Guava!! xx
As you can see, we were pretty excited upon arriving to the fairgrounds... Music was blaring, everyone was dancing, and there was even a carnival!! It was definitely the ideal weekend getaway, and the best welcome back home for the summer!
Musically, the live performances were jaw-dropping. Seeing a great deal of the artists and bands that flood my top 25 most played on iTunes was absolutely INCREDIBLE. I must say, there are pros and cons to seeing your favorite artists in a festival setting. The atmosphere at a festival is like no other, the charm and infectious enthusiasm is enough to get anyone's adrenaline pumping. However, in some cases, you can lose a lot of the intimacy in a performance at a festival. The sets are shorter and due to the vast multitude of listeners in the audience, not everyone will be as engaged in the performance... After all, it is a festival where there are handfuls of bands which pools interest of a lot of different ears and minds.
Two of the standout performances for me personally were Passion Pit and Hozier. I have been listening to Passion Pit for years now, and to get to see them live was so amazing. I loved their vibe live, everything was so ambient and set the perfect mood for effortless, blissful listening. The lead singer's tone was spot on and so energetic, and he carried the set with so much enthusiasm and light. The interludes of soft synth added so much drama and dynamic to the performance, and I was hanging onto every note.
Seeing Hozier after practically knowing his debut album forewords and backwards left me speechless. I honestly can't believe I got the chance to see him live... He sounded better in his performance than on the album!! The venue, however, was not ideal because it was a huge amphitheater. It swallowed the performance, and the space didn't engage the audience enough to leave an impression on new listeners. Nevertheless, it was INCREDIBLE. The vulnerability in his vocal performance accompanied with the organic rock sound made for an extremely memorable performance.

my spring playlist
Finally spring is in our midst after this excruciating winter, and I could not be happier. With spring comes vibrant florals, beach days, and, of course... A NEW PLAYLIST!! I honestly cannot believe I made it to spring as a temporary Bostonian, but I must say Boston totally evolves as the seasons change which is one of the many reasons why I have totally fallen in love with living in this place. Spring's bright and effortless mindset brings so much variety to the music I listen to. So here is a compilation of some of the songs I just can't get enough of this spring... Happy listening!! xx
Florida Kilos | Lana del Rey (Sailors Remix) // https://soundcloud.com/sailorsofficial/lana-del-rey-florida-kilos-sailors-remix-1 {Let me just start off by saying this is one of my faaaavorites off of Ultraviolence. This remix is so smooth and easy, I just love the vibe... and of course Lana. I'm one of the biggest fans ever, everything about her is just so interesting to me. She's so sultry and twisted in a dark, intriguing way and this is great whether you're at the beach or just looking for something chill to listen to}
Sexual Healing | Marvin Gaye (Kygo Remix) // https://soundcloud.com/kygo/marvin-gaye-sexual-healing {Everything about this track is appealing: Marvin Gaye's incredible voice complemented by Kygo's climactic rendition of the instrumentation... It's just too good to sit still to. This song was the spring break ANTHEM for me and my friends simply because it's a fresh, fun take on a classic tune. Kygo adds dynamics to the perfect points in the song, and drops out to add drama at just the right places. Just downright obsessed}
Boardwalks | Little May // https://soundcloud.com/littlemaymusic/boardwalks {One of my best friends at Berklee, Sam, showed me this song, and I haven't stopped listening to it since. I truly think Little May is the girl group version of Mumford & Sons so naturally I fell in love. There is such an innocent, pure tone to the vocals and it goes perfectly with the rhythmic acoustic guitar... The simplicity in this song is a perfect example of less is more. From production to performance, this song is sweet, punchy, and irresistibly catchy... What's not to love?!}
Life Round Here | James Blake ft. Chance the Rapper // https://soundcloud.com/noisey/james-blake-feat-chance-the
{Okay, this is a power duo if I've ever seen one... James Blake's velvety voice coupled with Chance's conversational rap style adds SO much color to this track. The dimension and back and forth between the two artists makes the texture so interesting. The instrumentation does not step on the vocal performances, rather is woven into the mix which is one of the most incredible qualities of this song. A must-listen}
Dirty Laundry | Blackbear (TWRK Remix) // https://soundcloud.com/twrk/dirty-laundry-twrk-remix

Drake | If You're reading this, it's too late
Here is an album review for Drake's latest release If You're Reading This, It's Too Late, which I recently submitted for my college's online publication, The Berklee Groove. Enjoy! xx
In today’s music market, streaming sites are the dominant force in accessing artists’ discographies, and Drake is not an exception to this. His release of If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late was intended to be a free mix tape, but due to complications under his current contract with Cash Money Records, he put a price on his 17-song compilation and released it as an album for profit.
Does Drake’s intention for this release to be free impact the quality of each track? It seems that this album does not match up to his musically dynamic, climactic records of his previous albums such as Nothing was the Same and Take Care. His past works placed words and music on the same wavelength, honoring and paying close attention detail. If You’re Reading This features droning bass beats, sparse percussive riffs, and some of the most honest lyrics Drake has ever showcased. His aggressive rap verses are accompanied by hooks such as “Oh my god, if I die I’m a legend” and “I got a lot of enemies tryna drain me of my energy”, both vocalizing his personal success.
With this being said, although he presents some promising pieces such as the smooth, soulful track “Jungle” and the driving, poetic “6 PM in New York”, If You’re Reading This does not possess the same infectious hits as his previous singles such as “Started From the Bottom” and “Headlines”. For an artist with so much prestige and such a huge following, this album does not quite match up to the caliber of his reputable releases.
If You’re Reading This could arguably be more of a political statement than artistic. Drake’s fight to break away from his recording contract and progress as an individual artist is at the forefront of priorities for the widely acclaimed rapper, and this “mix tape” is an eclectic narrative of Drake’s success.

snowed in song selections
The winter season is in full swing and as a temporary Bostonian I can honestly say seasonal depression is real. With that being said, seeing the city I love adorned in fluffy white snow is simply beautiful and so special to my floridian ignorance to the changing of seasons. Since I have been snowed in for three different blizzards, it has given me a lot of time to bury myself in big blankets good books and, of course, new music. I have put together a little mellow playlist to help knock off the winter blues or to just take a minute to reflect and just effortlessly listen to some great tunes... Stay warm and happy listening! xx

the spotlight album
So recently I've been extremely experimental with genres, and I've found a bunch of incredible stuff. This week I have really been analyzing and dissecting a multitude of songs and really trying to open my mind and ears to some new sounds. One album that I've stumbled across in particular is Youth Lagoon's "The Year of Hibernation". I think this definitely isn't something you can listen to once because the more you listen to it the more of an impact it has on the listener. I think the album just has an ethereal and melancholy sound which is appealing and most definitely unique. Lyrically the album is heart-wrenchingly beautiful, and the instrumentation is on the same wavelength. Honestly reading along with the lyrics while listening is the best way to get the most out of this album... It is SO breathtaking. The songs that stood out most to me are "Cannons", "Ghost of Me", "July", "Montana" and basically the whole thing. It is a beautiful compilation of artistry and stories which adds so much core to the sound. The specific details make it relatable in a sense that it draws a picture for the listener. This is just genius to me... I hope you find the same magic in it as I did, happy listening!! xx

an alternative love affair
Today I spent most of the day on iTunes digging through EP's and exploring all the new music... and I found some pretty awesome stuff. My favorite genre to search under is Alternative, not only because it's one of my favorites to listen to recreationally, but because of the variety of sounds in that particular section of the iTunes store. It's always refreshing not knowing exactly what to expect from certain tracks, and it's always a surprise with alternative music... nothing is quite predictable which is one of the reasons why I think I'm so drawn to it. So here are a few of my finds, I hope you find them as fun and unique as I do... Happy listening! xx
Greek Tragedy // The Wombats - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPU7PNW14pU {this track has a heavy beat and it's just really catchy. the singer's voice is just really smooth and i find this to be a versatile record, it merges alternative with a pop-punk vibe and it's intense in all the right ways. the drums and guitar deeply contrast and the vocals effortless layer on top. also LOVE the line "my character's strong but my head is loose"... so good}
Ain't Gonna Drown // Elle King - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBAFz880b_Y {okay this song is one of the coolest ones I've heard in a while... it is SO bluesy and her voice is just to die for. i love how simple the track is, i think it all just works. i really am obsessed with this, it's so different from anything that's been put out recently and it's sounds so reminiscent}
Past Lives // BORNS - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cux2qJjApGA {this song is from the Candy EP and honestly every song sounds like an instant hit to me. this one just stood out to me in particular because of the intro... it's so powerful and fluid which totally sets the mood of the entire song. i love how it starts with just the electronic drums when it starts to pick up and then begins to layer formally and dynamically... seriously this entire EP is fabulous, I love love love it}
1965 // Zella Day - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4REqXDKvxU {THIS SONG IS SO MY STYLE IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY. when i heard this i was like "this is so lana" and i naturally fell in love. i love how her voice quivers on sustained notes and this is just so perfect. and that's all i really have to say about that one. love. obsessed}
A Rush of Blood // Coasts - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUEDTlzbY3U {i think it was the drums that truly sold me on this one. i love the way the vocals are simple while the instrumentation of the band is so complex. it all intertwines and comes together so nicely. this is like Coldplay meets Walk the Moon which is an instant favorite for me}
So these are my most recent alternative finds! I know they're pretty eccentric and random but they caught my attention and I think all evoke different emotions and appeal to a wide spectrum of people... Happy listening!! xx

LET'S TALK LINEUPS
Okay so with a new year comes all the major festivals which naturally calls for new line-ups. My anticipation for these is always through the roof, wondering if the largely-renowned festivals can out-do themselves year after year. So there's the undeniable debate: Bonnaroo vs. Coachella.... and the stakes are pretty high this year. Bonnaroo, the annual festival held in Manchester, Tennessee, seems to be coming in pretty clutch with Mumford and Sons and Billy Joel as the headliners this June. Some other performers include Kendrick Lamar, Deadmau5, Florence + the Machine, Flume, Hozier, Tove Lo, Earth, Wind, & Fire, and so many other big names in the current charts across genres and styles, making for a pretty solid lineup. On the other hand, Coachella, the spring festival in Indio, California, has a lineup that I personally think is killer. Headliners AC/DC, Jack White, and Drake will be joined by many other performers including the Weeknd, Alt-J, Bad Suns, Chet Faker, Marina and the Diamonds, and countless other acts. Honestly I think Coachella has Bonnaroo beat this year overall with the caliber and quantity of such different acts to make for such a well-rounded weekend of performances. Obviously no lineup is perfect, and opinions on such things are so heavily reliant on an individual's personal taste. Either way you sway, these aren't just shows, they are experiences, and are both amazing in their own right. SO... are you team Bonnaroo or team Coachella for 2015? xx

// Music for c a r s //
If you know me, you know that I am the biggest fan of the 1975, an indie pop band that originated in Manchester, England and has single-handedly revolutionized popular music. I'm sorry if this post is such a cliche to the people who know me personally, but I just cannot help but dedicate a post to them. I have so much respect for them and their music transcends all boundaries of pop music. Their self-titled debut album cultivates and incorporates infectiously catchy 80's style synth with metaphoric, strong lyrics. I love how they romanticize the iconic ideals of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, star-crossed lovers, and the stereotypical girl. The honesty of the lyrics combined with the catchiness of the tune makes for a versatile record that can appeal to a variety of listeners. I don't think I've been this obsessed with a band since I was a preteen screaming at a Jonas Brothers concert... Seriously I could go on for days about how much I love the 1975. The words to the music to even the way they market themselves, all of it is genius. From synth-heavy "Menswear" to the ominous, vocally stunning "Robbers", these guys have really made a name for themselves internationally. They were voted the hardest working band of 2014, and they have played more gigs than anyone since 2010 (which is UNREAL). If you have not sat down and listened to their album start to finish, I am demanding you do it right this instant. The way they tamper with sounds and can manipulate human emotions and evoke feeling within the listener is one of the reasons why I fell in love with them. Their album is a comprehensive blend of their beliefs, ideals, opinions, and thoughts, and it is art. It's hard to find that honesty in pop music today, and I think the 1975 has reached new heights with their album, blurring genres, creating their own sound, and shedding a new light on musical intellect.
I'm one of the many obsessive fans of this group, and I absolutely cannot wait for them to release their new album so I can post again about how much I love them... I'll link their FULL ALBUM below, so there are no excuses. You must press play. Happy listening! xx

noteworthy covers
To me, one of the most indicative qualities of a talented musician is their ability to execute a cover that is an interpretation, rather than a regurgitation, of someone else's work. It is so admirable to see artists who are self-advocates of their own craft and take ownership of their individuality as a musician by reconstructing a song and making it their own. I have SO many covers that I love very much, but here are a few of my all-time favorite covers... Happy listening! xx
Fleet Foxes - Holocene (Bon Iver Cover) // https://soundcloud.com/fleetfoxessing/holocene {i love this for a multitude of reasons, but I would say I like the sensitivity of it the most. The harmonies layered together with the simplicity of the acoustic guitar really add emphasis on the emotion of the lyrics which I think sets it apart from the original}
Ben Howard - Video Games (Lana del Rey Cover) // https://soundcloud.com/dannypatricklynch/ben-howard-video-games-lana {First of all, I am such a huge Lana fan and I think it is so incredibly hard to cover her songs. HOWEVER, Ben Howard's spin on Video Games is so expressive, especially when the guitar riff picks up in the first chorus.. the dialogue between the vocals and guitar are so unique and give this alternative ballad a folksy driving pace}
Ellie Goulding - Tessellate (Alt-J Cover) // https://soundcloud.com/elliegoulding/tessellate-alt-j-cover {Okay Ellie Goulding's sound is just so infectiously cool I can't get over it. I feel like she could sing me the phonebook and I would still swoon. This cover is so drastically different from the original in the sense that it is a lot more sparse, not as heavy sounding, and much more syncopated. The beats really lock in with the rhythmic vocal lines and I just love this cover}
Callie Sullivan - Fast Car/Drunk (Ed Sheeran/Tracy Chapman Cover) // https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LC4qRKln9Qw {So this one has a very special place in my heart because it's one of my closest friends, CALLE SHEA!! She integrated two completely different songs into one seamless cover, and her voice is so precise and crisp which adds so much dimension to the lyrics. Her voice totally draws people in, the way it flows dynamically and lyrically is so effortless and it pieces together perfectly. Not to mention Callie won best cover song in the Ohio Music Awards with this song!! Callie is such a talented songwriter and musician, and she is one of the many amazing people i have met so far at Berklee}
Shannon Saunders - Medley of Wrecking Ball, Royals, Roar (Miley Cyrus/Lorde/Katy Perry Cover) // https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3ZcK14f1ss {this is a PSA: I am OBSESSED with Shannon Saunders. She is one of my favorite artists of all time. She is beyond original and completely mesmerizing. This medley is so smooth and completely meshes three very different songs into one cohesive, expressive performance. Her originals are also so incredible, and I'm sure you will see a lot more of Shannon on this site... I just love the fragility of her voice. Just so beautiful}
These are just a few of the many covers I love, and I would love to hear some of your favorite covers!! xx
